Technocentric Education: Effective Uses of Technology in K-12 Education

In the world of education today, as well as in every other area of life, technology obviously plays a very practical and beneficial role. However, we have to admit that technology isn't utopia; it is not the solution to every problem. That is especially true in education, particularly in the primary grades. Lewis Perelman (1992) states from his perspective that there should be a "major overhaul that would transform  teaching learning from traditional, human interactive activity into a machine-intensive activity." If we take a close look around us we will come to the realization that in spite of all the changes that have occurred, the fact remains that computers have not been used to ever completely replace all human efforts in any other industry. So why schools? why teachers? Why now? Whereas technology has become a viable and helpful tool for the banker, the accountant, the physician, the engineer, and we can go on naming various industries, it has only become a very useful aid, not a replacement. Therefore, why is there such an emphasis on the subject of teachers being replaced, when teachers are in fact crucial to the teaching and  learning process? I close with two questions from Picciano (2011), "Should all schools acquire such systems, and should schools with these systems expand their use?" and, "Because technology is good, is more technology better?" What do you think?
